We like to schedule newborn sessions within the first 8-14 days of birth, as this is when they are still in their sleepiest state. After two weeks, newborn babies tend to sleep less deeply, are more easily disturbed, and are not as apt to be posed into those cute sleepy newborn positions. Baby acne and colic may also flare up around this time.
All our newborn sessions take place at Protege Studio’s private baby nursery. Our facility has an abundance of natural light along with equipment, studio lights, and props are set up and ready to go. We provide many props for our newborn sessions. This includes everything you see in any image in our newborn gallery on this site- baskets, crates, bowls, wraps, little hats, headbands, beanies, hat/pant outfits, wraps, blankets, furs, cocoons, etc. Many of our items are handmade especially for our studio from our favorite vendors, and most of our wrap and layering fabrics come from high end Italian mills. Please note we hand wash all our delicate props in a free and clear detergent and all our blankets are run through a sanitizing wash cycle.
Newborn sessions can range from 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on baby. Our nursery is kept at 85 degrees to keep your baby nice and warm. The environment is quiet, calm and caters to your baby 100%. We work as a team during our newborn sessions, our assistants handles the baby from start to finish and prepares all the artistic prop set ups/shots you see on our site here. Although we begin each session with a prepared plan of shots, we recognize that every baby is different. Some babies love to be on their back, some prefer to be on their tummy, and most all prefer to be swaddled.
One of the most imperative things is to keep baby awake 2-3 hours before their session so that they are nice and sleepy. Do not feed them until right before we begin the session. When we begin, we will have you feed baby well, and this will keep baby nice and full during their session. If your baby takes a paci, be sure to keep in handy. Even if baby does not intend on using one permanently, it is often convenient during pictures to keep baby calm and soothed for the 2 hours they will be taking photos. This is much easier than moving baby each time they need soothed. If you do not have one, we have new ones we keep at our studio. We will be prepared with wipes, burp cloths and rags, as babies will have accidents during their sessions. Newborn sessions are often in the nude so messes are normal. All of our blankets are pre-washed.
As newborn photographers, our job is to follow baby’s que, work within their comfort zone, and ALWAYS put baby’s safety first. If baby doesn’t like a planned position or pose, we move on.
We are fully licensed and insured business with your family and baby’s best interest at heart. Our expertise and extensive experience in handling, posing and photographing baby and newborn will give you a peace of mind that you will be in the very best of hands.
